Reaching for your phone often happens automatically. This week, use that moment as a reminder to check in with yourself first.

Why this experiment?

Many of our habits happen before we're consciously aware of them. Sometimes we reach for our phone because we're bored, stressed, lonely or mentally tired rather than because we actually need it. Learning to pause helps reconnect behaviour with bodily awareness.

The experiment

Whenever you notice yourself about to pick up your phone, pause for a few seconds.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I feel in my body?

  • Am I tired?

  • Restless?

  • Hungry?

  • Stressed?

  • Bored?

Then decide whether you still want to use your phone.

There is no right or wrong answer.

The pause itself is the experiment.

If it's harder than expected

You'll probably forget many times.

That's expected.

The goal isn't to interrupt every phone use. It's simply to notice a few of them.

Make it easier

Start with one situation, such as picking up your phone while waiting in a queue or during meals.

Small moments quickly add up.

Try it

Try it for seven days. If you notice a difference, continue for another two weeks and see what changes.
