Many of us have become so used to being productive that even our hobbies start to feel like work.
This week, give yourself permission to do something simply because you enjoy it, without trying to be productive.
Why this experiment?
Not everything needs to improve your health, teach you a skill or contribute to your career. Activities that have no obvious purpose can still provide rest, enjoyment and a break from constantly working towards the next goal.
The experiment
Choose one activity this week that has no productive outcome.
Read a novel. Listen to music. Sit in the garden. Build a puzzle. Watch the clouds. Sketch badly.
The activity itself doesn't matter. The only rule is that you're not doing it to optimise yourself.
If it's harder than expected
You may catch yourself thinking that you "should" be doing something more useful.
Simply notice that thought.
You don't have to argue with it or make it disappear. Just recognise that productivity isn't the only measure of a well-spent hour.
Make it easier
Start with just 15–20 minutes.
Put your phone away while you're doing it.
Choose something that genuinely appeals to you rather than something you think you should enjoy.
Resist the urge to turn it into a challenge, project or learning opportunity.
What to notice
Afterwards, ask yourself:
Was it difficult not to be productive?
Did you enjoy the activity more than you expected?
Did you feel more rested afterwards?
