Experiment #11: Relax Your Jaw

Updated: Sep 1

Release Hidden Tension
Many people carry tension all day without realising it. Your jaw, shoulders and abdomen are common places where stress quietly accumulates.
Why this experiment?
Stress activates your body's fight-or-flight response. One consequence is increased muscle tension, often without conscious awareness. Briefly relaxing these muscles can help signal safety to the nervous system.
The experiment
Set three reminders during the day.
Whenever one appears:
unclench your jaw
let your shoulders drop
soften your belly
breathe out slowly
Take your time.
The whole exercise takes less than thirty seconds.
If it's harder than expected
Some people realise their jaw tightens again within seconds.
That's normal.
You're not trying to stay relaxed all day. You're simply becoming aware of tension that was already there.
Make it easier
Link the exercise to something you already do, such as making coffee, washing your hands or stopping at a red traffic light.
Try it
Try it for seven days. If you notice a difference, continue for another two weeks and see what changes.
